Pitch shifter pedals are powerful creative tools that can completely reshape your guitar or bass sound. You can thicken a riff with a sub-octave, extend your range by semitones or octaves, and craft lush  harmonies that transform your performance. From streamlined octavers to advanced polyphonic pitch shifters, BOSS offers a pitch pedal to suit every guitarist and bassist. With endless creative potential, these stompboxes are designed to inspire experimentation and exploration. Read on to discover five ways to harness the power of pitch shifters and take your music further.

Since the early 1980s, BOSS has led the way in pitch-based effects, beginning with the OC-2 Octave in 1982. This pioneering compact pedal stayed in production until 2005 and remains a benchmark for warm, musical sub-octave tones. The current OC-5 Octave carries that legacy forward, complete with a Vintage mode that faithfully captures the character of the original.

In 1987, BOSS continued to push boundaries with the PS-2 Digital Pitch Shifter/Delay—the world’s first stompbox to deliver real-time pitch shifting in defined intervals. Since then, BOSS has continued to refine its pitch-shifting technology, offering deeper control, richer sound, and ever-expanding creative scope.

That same pioneering spirit drives today’s lineup, from the OC-5 Octave and PS-6 Harmonist to the class-leading XS-1 and XS-100 Poly Shifters. Leveraging cutting-edge algorithms and a SHARC processor, BOSS XS-series pedals are the modern benchmark for pitch-based creativity.

The XS-1 and flagship XS-100 usher in a new era of pitch shifting, and in the demo videos below, the XS-1 takes center stage. These clips highlight how a few simple pitch pedal settings can add depth, harmony, and character to your tone—especially when paired with other units.

We hope this inspires you to have fun experimenting with new ideas and add fresh colors to your musical palette.

1. Distortion and Fuzz

Pitch shifters let you extend your guitar’s range and explore down-tunings on the fly, often eliminating instrument changes. Dialed in for sub-octaves or lowered intervals, they shine when paired with heavy distortion or fuzz.

When paired with aggressive, metal–focused distortion pedals such as the MT-2W Metal Zone or HM-2W Heavy Metal, the XS-1’s razor-sharp pitching capabilities excel at emulating drop-tuned, downtuned, and extended-range guitars.

For example, by selecting a two-semitone (major second) shift downward, a D Standard-tuned guitar can be heard in C Standard without changing instruments or impacting string tension. This works in both Moment mode (allowing players to reach for additional low notes momentarily) and Toggle mode (enabling virtual instrument retuning).

In the above examples, the MT-2W delivers its signature saturation with an XS-1 set either one octave or seven semitones (perfect fifth) down.

Similarly, the HM-2W receives a signal dropped an octave lower, producing guttural bass grind.

The OC-5, XS-1, and XS-100 work brilliantly with fuzz using a thick, doubled sub-octave accompaniment that makes riffs sound massive. As demonstrated, try blending a -1 octave with your dry signal ahead of a fuzz pedal, such as the FZ-1W Fuzz, to achieve a full-bodied, gnarly tone.

2. Stereo Reverb and Delay

Conventional pitch shifters rely on a pitch detection circuit that requires a clear and relatively unprocessed signal to track notes. That’s why they often need to sit at the beginning of your effects chain. Unfortunately, this can hinder creativity, because flexible placement is everything when it comes to unlocking new sounds in combination with other pedals.

The XS-1 and XS-100 change that. Using advanced digital algorithms in tandem with a SHARC processor, they can track your pitch with unprecedented accuracy anywhere in your signal path. The result? A whole new world of creative possibilities.

One exciting method of enhancing your sound is to pair a pitch shifter with stereo-equipped ambient effects, such as the RV-6 Reverb and SDE-3 Dual Digital Delay. In these examples, Output B feeds the XS-1, while Output A bypasses it.

Pitched an octave up, the reverberated sound of the RV-6 is imbued with radiant shimmer. Meanwhile, the SDE-3 repeats are harmonized using a five-semitone interval (perfect fourth) downward, creating a unique and expansive delay sound. Using an expression pedal, you can take things a step further by adjusting pitch on the fly.

3. Rotary

Using effects to transform your guitar into a completely different-sounding instrument adds new textures to your music while pushing your playing into uncharted territory. Experimenting like this is a lot of fun, and once you start exploring, you’ll quickly stumble upon new sounds you never knew were possible.

Pairing pitch and rotary pedals, such as the RT-2 Rotary Ensemble, produces organ-like tones that work well with slowly strummed chord patterns or gently picked progressions. This sound can be achieved with any pitch pedal capable of generating a simple +1 octave and blending in the dry signal; so the OC-5, PS-6, XS-1, and XS-100 are all suitable options.

In this setup, the RT-2 receives the XS-1’s output, set one octave up with a 50:50 mix of wet and dry signals. This octave-layered effect works together with the Leslie cabinet–like swirl of classic rotary to produce a harmonically rich tone that evokes the depth and movement of a vintage organ.

For added movement and expression, long-press the RT-2’s onboard footswitch to toggle its speed settings. This dynamic modulation produces a sound similar to John Frusciante’s guitar tone on the Red Hot Chili Peppers track “Wet Sand.”

4. Detune (chorus-style)

The Detune mode is a distinctive and versatile feature of pitch shifters like the XS-1, XS-100, and PS-6. It gives you the ability to create lush, chorus-style textures.

With the XS-1 set to Detune, the Shift control at one semitone (the range is -20 to +20 cents), and the Balance knob around 11 o’clock, you can achieve a beautifully smooth, chorus-like thickening effect that suits virtually any style of playing.

In this demo, we compare the XS-1’s Detune sound to the classic modulation of the CH-1 Super Chorus and CE-2W Chorus.

While the CH-1 and CE-2W offer their own unique voices, the XS-1 stands out for its clarity and articulation—wonderful for picked chord patterns and melodic leads.

5. Expanded Control & Expression (CTL/EXP)

Featuring a huge array of performance options, the XS-100 is made for musicians who require the ultimate dynamic pitch expression tool. Every feature is designed to give you complete command over your sound. It’s a powerhouse for both live and studio work.

The XS-1 excels at rapid retuning with flawless sound and also features expanded control. Connecting external footswitches enables quick access to up to three tuning setups. Alternatively, you can hook up an expression pedal for continuous pitch control.

Adding a BOSS FS-7 Dual Footswitch significantly enhances the capabilities of the XS-1. Compact yet impressively versatile, the FS-7 lets you access two distinct pitch presets with ease. What’s more, each footswitch can be independently set to either Toggle or Moment mode.

By pairing the XS-1 with the BOSS EV-30 Dual Expression Pedal, you can perform pitch sweeps up or down, as you would using the XS-100.

Going deeper, an expression pedal-equipped XS-1 can be teamed with a high-quality delay pedal, like the DM-2W Delay, for dreamy, psychedelic embellishments. This technique naturally lends itself to ambient textures and soundscape atmospherics.

Endlessly Inspiring

The creative scope of BOSS pitch shifter pedals is vast. From a simple sub-octave layer to jaw-dropping performance wizardry, they transcend conventional effects by adding new voices and pushing the boundaries of traditional technique.

If you’re ready to expand your tonal range and venture beyond the ordinary, a pitch shifter could prove an indispensable creative ally. And with the XS-1 and XS-100 able to sit anywhere in your signal chain, the next-generation Poly Shifters are bound to spark your imagination.

Versatile, expressive, and endlessly inspiring, BOSS pitch shifter pedals are a must-have in every forward-thinking player’s sonic toolkit.
