Introduced in 2023, the BOSS ME-90 is the gold standard for user-friendly multi-effects pedals. With its knob-based interface, it builds on the ME-80 and provides a straightforward experience. Simple sound creation and uninterrupted playing contribute to the appeal of the ME-90. In addition, the ME-90 packs features often reserved only for high-end products into an affordable package. Let’s explore some of the more advanced ME-90 features.

Using the FX Loop Send/Return

A requested upgrade within the ME-90 is an FX Loop, which enables guitarists to combine their favorite compact pedals with the ME-90. For example, one can add an external boost pedal into the front of the preamp or a favorite reverb pedal in the FX loop post preamp. To set this up, follow these steps:

  1. On the unit, select whether the SEND/RETURN comes before the preamp or after the preamp in the signal chain.
  2. Switch to Manual mode, and press Edit until S0 appears.
  3. Use bank switches to swap between S0 and S1, where the former comes before, and the latter comes after the preamp.
  4. Press Write.

Memory

  1. In MEMORY mode, activate the FX Loop per preset using BOSS Tone Studio.
  2. Toggle the Send/Return FX block on or off in the editor section.
  3. Select pre or post in BOSS Tone Studio.

Manual

  1. When playing in MANUAL mode, the REV/CTL switch can turn the FX Loop on and off.
  2. Press edit until R0 appears.
  3. Use the bank switch to change to R1 and press write.
  4. Control the FX Send/Return while in play.

Setting Tap Tempo and Modulation Speed

Tap Tempo is a valuable function for time-based effects, such as delay. Set the delay to play back in dotted-eighth note or quarter-note intervals by pressing the pedal in time with the tempo.

In Manual mode, set the delay type to TEMPO and use TIME to set the rhythm. Press the delay pedal twice in time with the desired tempo. In Memory mode, it works the same. Use the correlating footswitch number (1-4), depending on the patch, instead of the delay footswitch. One can also set modulation speed using the same technique.

Combining Memory and Manual for Flexibility

Memory and Manual modes are two distinct operation types. However, what if one wants to recall a memory preset and then toggle on/off or select additional effects? Using the ME-90, players can recall a preset and set it so the CTL button either changes an FX parameter or activates additional FX.

When playing a lead sound preset, pressing or holding CTL increases the level of the drive FX. This feature is perfect for when a big solo is coming up. When using a clean preset, try selecting CTL to quickly add modulation or delay.

Configuring the CTL pedal functions is easy. In BOSS Tone Studio, look for the CTL box in the center. Open that when editing a preset, and there are several options. MODE controls toggling the function on/off. Moment activates the effect only when the pedal gets pressed. The CTL function can change a specific FX parameter or turn effects on and off.

Sending MIDI Program Change Messages

When connected to a PC via USB, the ME-90 can receive MIDI data. A DAW can control patch changes and specified parameters at specific times. In addition to switching patch numbers, the ME-90 can send control change messages to the expression and CTL pedals and switch effects on and off. This can be especially useful when using the ME-90 as a performance tool.

Wireless Control with the FS-1-WL and EV-1-WL

With the Bluetooth® Audio MIDI Dual Adaptor, you can wirelessly connect an additional footswitch and/or expression pedal to the ME-90. Using the iOS/Android BOSS Tone Studio for the ME-90 app, set MIDI parameters to suit the desired sound.

The FS-1-WL footswitch lets players send MIDI control messages to the ME-90 and change parameters. The EV-1-WL wireless MIDI expression pedal allows users to send MIDI control messages to the ME-90. These advanced ME-90 functions can help a novice become a future power user in no time. Dive in and make the most of this simple yet powerful multi-effects unit.
